World’s Oldest Trees Found

Scientists say they’ve found the world’s oldest living trees in Sweden.

The Norway spruce trees (these two Scandinavian countries share a lot of culture, and the languages are easily understood by members of each country) are 8,000 years old, Reuters reports. They’re said to be the first trees to emerge after the Ice Age.

The big loser is California, whose “Methuselah” tree is often said to hold the age record at somewhere around 5,000 years.

Last year, researchers reconstructed what they think might have been the planet’s first tree, hence the oldest non-living tree.
